Clyde Pangborn was a man of many firsts. He was the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean, the first to fly over the North Pole, and the first to fly from New York to Tokyo. He was also the last of the great barnstormers, a group of daredevil pilots who performed dangerous stunts in the early days of aviation.

Pangborn was born in 1895 in Blairstown, New Jersey. He grew up fascinated by aviation and built his first airplane at the age of 15. In 1917, he joined the Army Air Service and flew combat missions in World War I.

After the war, Pangborn returned to the United States and began barnstorming. He performed daring stunts such as flying upside down, making loops, and landing on rooftops. He also became known for his long-distance flights.

In 1931, Pangborn and his co-pilot, Hugh Herndon, made the first successful solo flight across the Pacific Ocean. They flew from San Francisco to Tokyo in a Lockheed Vega monoplane named the Miss Veedol.

Two years later, Pangborn and Herndon made the first flight over the North Pole. They flew from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Greenland in a Lockheed Vega named the Explorer.

In 1935, Pangborn and Herndon attempted to fly from New York to Tokyo in the Miss Veedol. They crashed in Siberia after running out of fuel. Pangborn and Herndon were rescued and returned to the United States.

Pangborn continued to fly until his death in 1958. He was a pioneer of aviation and a true American hero.
